Description

This rare Renaissance book contains eighty-one engravings of curious Mediterranean fish that Italian physician Ippolito Salviani collected from the fish markets of Rome in the 1550s. This high quality digital rendering allows for detailed exploration of the beautiful original plates.

Salviani’s book is the first to use the technique of copper-engraving for depicting fishes, much more suitable than woodcuts. The fine lines of the engravings aptly capture such details of the aquatic creatures as the shininess of the eyes, the reflections of the scales and the filigree fins.

Salviani was physician to the House of Farnese and three successive popes: Julius III, Marcellus II and Paul IV. Besides this splendid book, he published a medical work on the Galenic theory of crises. As a Renaissance scientist, he followed in the footsteps of Aristotle, whose work on fish (included in Historia Animalium, 350 BC) is the earliest know study in a field now known as Ichthyology.

The volume was privately printed by Salviani, and this first edition copy was bound in limp vellum. The copper engravings were ahead of their time, and their skill in depicting fish was unmatched for over a century.
